Trading XAU/USD on the FxPro platform
Finding gold, sizing the order and setting the exit are three separate actions, and doing them in that order is what keeps a gold trade from becoming a guess.
Finding XAU/USD in the terminal
Find gold by its code, XAU/USD, in the Market Watch or symbol list of whichever platform you chose. MT4, MT5, cTrader and FxPro Edge each present the symbol list slightly differently, but the code is the same across all four. Search for XAU rather than typing gold, because the symbol name is the metal code, not the English word.
Once you have it, add it to your watchlist so it stays visible, and open the chart. Check the contract specification before you place anything: one standard lot is 100 oz and one pip is 0.01. That single line changes every number that follows, because your position size, pip value and margin all derive from it.
A reference price near 4275.0 gives you a starting point to sanity-check what the terminal shows. If the price on your chart is far from that, confirm you are looking at the right symbol and the right account before you size a trade.
Sizing the order with our calculators
Size the order with the position size calculator before you enter, working from the amount you are willing to lose rather than the amount you would like to make. With one pip at 0.01 on XAU/USD, a gold position moves in large naira terms per lot, so an oversized lot is the most common way a reasonable idea becomes an unreasonable loss.
Check the margin the position will lock up with the margin calculator. At 1:200 through the offshore entity, a 0.10-lot gold position needs about $85.50 margin. Leverage is a cap, not a setting to aim at, and one review cited 1:30 and 1:20 caps that conflict with the higher figure and were not verified at review, so treat the margin number your own account shows as the one that matters.
Use the pip value calculator to translate the move you expect into money, and the profit calculator to see the outcome at your target before you commit. Running these first turns a vague intention into a lot size you can actually justify, and it makes the exit level a decision rather than a reaction.
Setting the exit with the entry
Set the stop loss and take profit at the same time as the entry, not after the position is open. Decide the level where the trade is wrong and the level where it has done its job, and place both orders together. A position opened without a stop is a position whose worst case you have chosen not to define.
Place the stop where the trade idea fails, then let the position size calculator tell you whether that stop fits the risk you set. If the stop is too far for the lot size you wanted, the answer is a smaller lot, not a tighter stop. Adjusting the stop to fit the lot is how traders turn a defined risk into an undefined one.
Gold gaps and moves fast, so the distance between entry and stop should reflect the instrument's behaviour rather than a round number that feels comfortable. Keep the regulator position in view as well: FxPro is licensed by the FCA, CySEC and FSCA, but it holds no Nigerian SEC licence, and SEC Nigeria does not license offshore CFD brokers. Confirm any broker on the SEC Nigeria register of capital market operators.
Why XAU/USD appears under several symbols and which one to confirm before you trade
Gold on FxPro platforms is listed as XAU/USD, but you may see the same instrument under suffixes such as XAUUSD.m, XAUUSD.pro or similar tags because the broker runs more than one account type. The suffix tells you which pricing and execution profile the symbol belongs to, so check the symbol description in MT4, MT5, cTrader or FxPro Edge before you size anything. If the description does not state the contract size and currency, treat it as the wrong symbol and look for the plain XAU/USD listing.
The symbol that matters is the one whose contract specification matches 1 lot = 100 ounces of gold and whose quote is in US dollars. On FxPro you can open the specification window from the Market Watch list and read the contract size, tick size and margin currency directly. A symbol showing a different contract size or a different base currency is not the XAU/USD this page describes, even if the price looks close. Confirm the code in the terminal, not on a website screenshot, because account types can carry different suffixes.
Several listings exist because FxPro separates account types across MT4, MT5, cTrader and FxPro Edge, and each platform may label the same metal with its own suffix. The practical check is to search XAU in the symbol list, open each result, and keep the one whose contract size reads 100 and whose margin currency reads USD. If two symbols both meet that test, use the one your account was opened under. Do not assume a symbol with a suffix is a better or cheaper version; the suffix identifies the account, not the quality of the instrument.
What one lot of XAU/USD actually represents in ounces and dollars per pip
One standard lot of XAU/USD is 100 troy ounces of gold, so the position’s notional value is the quoted price multiplied by 100. At the reference price of 4275.0, one lot represents roughly $427,500 of gold exposure. That notional figure is what your margin is calculated against, not the cash you deposit. A 0.10-lot position is 10 ounces, and a 0.01-lot position is 1 ounce, which is why fractional sizing is the normal way to keep gold risk inside a naira-based account.
One pip in XAU/USD is 0.01 in the quoted price, and because one lot is 100 ounces, a 0.01 move is worth $1.00 per standard lot. On a 0.10-lot position the same 0.01 move is worth $0.10, and on 0.01 lot it is worth $0.01. That relationship is fixed by the contract size, not by the broker or the platform. When you see a gold price move from 4275.0 to 4276.0, that is 100 pips, which is $100 per standard lot and $10 on a 0.10-lot position.
The contract size also sets the margin requirement, which is the notional value divided by the leverage cap. At the 1:200 cap available via the offshore entity, a 0.10-lot gold position at the reference price needs about $85.50 margin. That figure scales with price and with lot size, so a full lot would need roughly $2,137.50 at the same price and cap. Treat the margin number as a minimum locked amount, not as your risk; your risk is set by where the stop sits relative to entry, which is a separate calculation.
Placing the stop-loss in the order ticket so the position is never unprotected
Set the stop-loss in the same order ticket that opens the position, not after the fill, because a market order can be filled and left unprotected while you switch screens. In MT4, MT5, cTrader and FxPro Edge the order ticket has a stop-loss field next to the entry price, and filling it before you press buy or sell attaches the stop at the moment the position is created. If the platform rejects the stop because it is too close to the market, widen it to a level the symbol specification allows and resubmit the whole order.
The stop distance should come from the chart and the contract size, not from a round naira figure. Decide the price where the trade idea is wrong, measure the distance in pips from entry, and convert it using 0.01 per pip per 100 ounces. For example, a 200-pip stop on 0.10 lot is $2.00 of risk. If that dollar risk is too large for the account, reduce the lot size rather than moving the stop closer, because a stop placed inside normal gold noise will be hit before the idea is tested.
Placing the stop at entry also fixes your maximum loss before the position can move against you, which matters on gold because a single session can travel a long way in pips. Once the position is open, check the stop is visible in the terminal’s trade tab and that it matches the ticket. If you use a platform that supports it, set the stop as a server-side order rather than a mental level, so it survives a disconnected connection. Do not rely on closing manually when the market is fast.
Reading the swap line on an XAU/USD position held past the daily rollover
The swap line shows the amount credited or debited to your account when a gold position is held through the broker’s daily rollover, and it is separate from spread and commission. For XAU/USD the swap is calculated on the notional ounces in the position, so a 0.10-lot position is charged or credited on 10 ounces, not on the margin. The line appears in the terminal’s trade tab and in the account statement, usually labelled swap or rollover, and it can be positive or negative depending on direction and on the rate differential the broker applies.
You cannot read a swap cost from this page because the number depends on the broker’s current swap rates, the position direction, and the day of the week, with some brokers applying a triple charge on a specific weekday to cover the weekend. What you can do is open the symbol specification in MT4, MT5, cTrader or FxPro Edge and read the long and short swap fields before you hold overnight. Those fields tell you the rate per lot per night, and you multiply by your lot size to see the naira equivalent at the prevailing exchange rate.
A position held for minutes or hours will usually not show a swap line at all, while a position held for days will accumulate one debit or credit per rollover. If the swap is negative and you plan to hold, include it in the trade’s cost alongside the spread and any commission, and compare it with the size of the move you expect. Do not assume the swap is small; on gold it can be material over weeks. Check the statement after the first rollover to confirm the actual charge on your account.
Checking that the stop and the lot size agree before you press the button
Before you submit, confirm three numbers in the order ticket: the lot size, the entry price and the stop-loss price. The ticket should show the stop in price terms, and you should be able to calculate the dollar risk as the stop distance in pips multiplied by 0.01 multiplied by the ounces in your lot size. On 0.10 lot, a 150-pip stop is $1.50 of risk; on 0.01 lot it is $0.15. If the ticket shows a stop that produces a risk larger than you intended, change the lot size rather than the stop.
The margin shown in the ticket is not the same as the risk. Margin is the amount locked against the notional value at the leverage cap, while risk is what you lose if the stop is hit. At the 1:200 cap a 0.10-lot gold position needs about $85.50 margin at the reference price, but the stop might risk $2.00 or $20.00 depending on distance. Check both figures: the margin must be available in the account, and the stop risk must be acceptable relative to the balance. Neither number substitutes for the other.
If the platform allows it, use the order ticket’s preview or validation step to see the margin requirement before submission. If the margin is close to your free balance, reduce the lot size, because a small adverse move could trigger a margin call before your stop is reached. On gold, where one lot is 100 ounces, the notional is large relative to a naira account, so fractional lots are the normal way to keep both margin and stop risk inside the account’s limits. Confirm the ticket, then submit.
What changes on the ticket when you switch between MT4, MT5, cTrader and FxPro Edge
The order ticket layout changes between platforms, but the fields you must fill are the same: symbol, lot size, entry type, stop-loss and take-profit. MT4 and MT5 place the stop-loss and take-profit in the same ticket as the entry, while cTrader and FxPro Edge may separate the protective orders into a post-entry panel depending on the order type. The contract size and pip value do not change between platforms, because they are properties of XAU/USD, not of the software. Confirm the symbol’s specification in each platform before you trade it.
MT5 and cTrader show more granular volume steps than MT4 in some account configurations, which affects the smallest position you can open. If you need a 0.01-lot position and the ticket rejects it, the platform or account type is enforcing a larger minimum volume, not the instrument. Check the symbol specification for the volume step and minimum volume before you plan a size. FxPro Edge may present the same information in a different panel, but the underlying contract of 100 ounces per lot remains the reference for every calculation.
The platform also determines how the swap line and the stop are displayed after the fill. MT4 and MT5 show swap in the trade tab and in the account history, while cTrader and FxPro Edge may label it differently but calculate it on the same notional ounces. None of the platforms change the fact that the stop must be placed at entry to protect the position. Use the platform you can read clearly, and verify the stop and swap fields after the first trade so you know where to look on the next one.
